One America

The One America Campaign represents a vital initiative aimed at countering the persistent trend of dividing US citizens into antagonistic subgroups. Often, such efforts propose limiting the rights of certain subgroups based on the pretext of national security concerns. However, the One America Campaign boldly asserts that we can uphold our pluralistic democracy while diligently safeguarding our nation from those who seek to inflict harm. We firmly believe that singling out specific American citizens based solely on their faith will ultimately undermine our collective safety and promote prejudice. Through the One America Campaign, we strive to foster a nation that is both secure and inclusive, recognizing that we can protect our national interests while embracing the diversity that makes us stronger.

Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the American Muslim community has embarked on a tumultuous social journey. Regrettably, public opinion concerning Islam and Muslims has increasingly tilted towards negativity with each passing survey. Instances of hate crimes targeting Muslims and their places of worship are on the rise nationwide, and the disheartening reality of Islamophobia has become disturbingly prevalent in society. Nevertheless, amidst these challenges, a glimmer of hope emerges. Prominent political and legal figures, esteemed newspaper editors and columnists, and dedicated interfaith leaders have emerged as vocal advocates for the Muslim community. In the words of the late Imam W. D. Muhammad, “this is both the worst and the best time for Muslims in America.” In this climate, a unique opportunity arises for Muslims to assert their own narrative and present it to the American public, fostering understanding and dispelling misconceptions.

American Muslims are acutely aware of the significant challenges confronting our nation and our community. We are resolute in our determination not to permit Islamophobes or un-Islamic extremist groups shape the narrative surrounding American Muslims or dictate our future. Instead, we, as American Muslims, will forge our own path by safeguarding our faith and actively contributing to the security and well-being of America. We firmly believe in charting our own destiny, ensuring that both our religious convictions and the safety of our nation are upheld with unwavering commitment.

Seizing the moment, the US Council of Muslim Organizations announced major educational, outreach, and civic empowerment initiatives to address growing Islamophobia in America and to enhance national harmony through the promotion of freedom and justice.

The One America Campaign encompasses several impactful initiatives aimed at fostering unity and understanding. These include a Million Voters Registration Drive, which kicked off before the 2016 presidential election to encourage active participation in the democratic process. Additionally, the campaign features National Open Mosque Day, an event specifically designed to promote meaningful interactions between American Muslims and individuals from diverse faiths and backgrounds. As part of this national Muslim coalition, the campaign seeks to forge new alliances and strengthen existing partnerships with interfaith organizations, social justice groups, and other minority communities that have encountered similar challenges. Through these initiatives, the One America Campaign strives to cultivate inclusivity, foster dialogue, and promote solidarity among all Americans.

National Voter Drive

As a part of USCMO’s One America Campaign volunteers, celebrities, and organizations nationwide unite election after election for National Voter Registration Day. Through coordinated efforts in the field, technology, and media, USCMO aims to raise awareness about voter registration opportunities, reaching tens of thousands who may have otherwise been left out.

Member organizations, volunteers, and local communities organize voter registration booths at mosques, schools, and numerous community centers across the nation. Our commitment to voter registration extends beyond presidential elections, encompassing midterms and local elections as well. We employ various on-the-ground and digital strategies to encourage voter registration.

We firmly believe that it is crucial for everyone to seize the opportunity to make their voices heard through the power of voting. Together, we can shape the future of our nation by participating in the democratic process.

In 2008, 6 million Americans didn’t vote because they missed a registration deadline or didn’t know how to register. In 2016, we wanted to make sure no one is left out. On September 27, 2016, volunteers, celebrities, and organizations from all over the country “hit the streets” for National Voter Registration Day. This single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts created a pervasive awareness of voter registration opportunities–allowing us to reach tens of thousands of voters who we could not reach otherwise.

The response to the One Million Voters Drive USCMO proclaimed in December 2015 and Get Out The Vote campaign across the nation had been overwhelmingly successful. Volunteers, member organizations, and local communities had responded by organizing voter registration booths at more than 2500 mosques, 500 schools, and many community centers nationwide, and during special holidays such as our National Muslim Voter Registration Day on Eid al-Adha, September 12, 2016.

Reports from various cities across the United States indicated that thousands of new Muslim voters had registered, surpassing any previous year in the history of the community. We believe there are two factors that have contributed to the success of this campaign and the high turnout of newly registered voters. One is due to the hard work of many Muslim organizations, activists, Imams, and local community leaders. The second is largely due to the highly charged political environment, the attack on the Muslim community and other minorities, and the serious concern over the sharp increase of hate crimes on the Muslim community.

According to the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), there were an estimated 500,000 Muslim voters in 2012. Based on the strong response compared to previous years, we believe we have reached our target goal of 1 million voters. Moreover, according to CAIR’s October election survey, 86 percent of registered Muslim voters intend to vote in this year’s presidential election.

We continue these efforts through our promotion of registering to vote for all elections whether presidential elections, midterms, or local elections.

Some of the ways we encourage voter registration are through:

  • Email campaigns to remind our community members to register
  • Providing links to register in all States on our website, Facebook and in emails
  • Posters and flyers distributed locally and nationally to encourage voter registration
  • Promotional videos on our Facebook, website and YouTube channel to spread voter awareness
  • National voter registration day where we have booths and volunteers available to register people to vote at mosques and during Eid prayer gatherings across the country

We believe it is of utmost importance for everyone to take the opportunity to have their voice heard!

The Muslim Vote

YOUR VOICE SHAPES OUR FUTURE. REGISTER TO VOTE NOW.

According to the Census Bureau, in 2020, over 25 million Americans were not registered to vote in the 2020 presidential election.

USCMO is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that Muslims are registered to vote in the upcoming presidential election because the Muslim vote matters. By actively participating in our democratic process, Muslims have the opportunity to shape policies, advocate for their rights, and contribute to the overall progress of the nation. The Muslim community’s concerns and aspirations deserve representation in the decision-making process, and registering to vote empowers them to have a voice in choosing leaders who will address their needs and protect their interests.

USCMO recognizes that a strong and engaged Muslim electorate can influence policies that promote justice, equality, and religious freedom for all Americans. Through active voter registration efforts, we strive to empower Muslims to exercise their civic duty and make a meaningful impact on the future of the country.

Through our dedicated volunteers, influential celebrities, and numerous organizations across the nation we will once again join our forces and take to the streets for the monumental Muslim Voter Registration Day.

National Voter Registration Day has been made possible in part by a working group of organizations providing coordination and support. These organizations include, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance Education Fund, Bipartisan Policy Center, Bus Federation Civic Fund, Fair Elections Legal Network, League of Women Voters, National Association of Secretaries of State, Nonprofit VOTE, Rock the Vote, and Voto Latino.
