WASHINGTON, DC – 9/5/2020) The US Council of Muslim Organizations, the largest umbrella group for American Muslim organizations, raises concerns over President Trump and VP Joe Biden for their views on democracy in the Muslim world.
In a statement, USCMO Secretary General Oussama Jammal said:
“Whoever serves as our nation’s president must not only uphold the best of American values at home, but abroad. That means pursuing a foreign policy that is peaceful, humanitarian, supportive of fair democratic elections, and respecting the will of the people.
“For far too long, both Republican and Democratic presidents have done the opposite, especially in the Muslim world, at great cost to our nation and others across the globe.
“Undermining democracies and bolstering dictatorships does not make our country safer. Funding occupation and arming tyrants does not make our country safer. Launching unjust wars and maintaining unnecessary military bases does not make our country safer.
“In fact, these policies have wasted trillions of American dollars, taken millions of lives, and created a cycle of conflict that continuously destabilizes the world and repeatedly reaches our own shores.
“No matter who takes the oath of office next January, this must come to an end. The next President of the United States should end endless wars, close down unnecessary military bases, stop funding human rights violations, and respect fair democratic elections. Only then can we hope to see peace in our lifetimes.”
