USCMO Congratulates Muslim Voters on Historic Turnout, Encourages President-Elect Biden to Advance Justice

(WASHINGTON, DC – 11/10/2020) The US Council of Muslim Organizations today congratulated President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice-President Elect Kamala Harris on their victory, and commended Muslim American voters for playing a decisive role in the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

USCMO also encouraged the incoming Biden Administration to include Muslim voices in key government positions and advance just policies both here and abroad.

In a statement, USCMO Secretary General Oussama Jammal said:

“We congratulate Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their election as the next President and Vice President of the United States. We especially appreciate President-Elect Biden’s call for healing and unity, his condemnation of racism and bigotry, and his promise to foster a more inclusive America.”

“We urge President-Elect Biden to put these words into action upon taking office by including Muslim Americans at every level of government, including the fight against COVID-19. We encourage him to pursue policies that foster racial equality, protect civil rights, respect religious freedom, and otherwise advance justice in our nation.”

“We also encourage President-Elect Biden to pursue a humanitarian and just foreign policy overseas, including in the Muslim world. Our nation should support movements for representative government, defend activists and journalists from state violence, work to peacefully resolve conflicts, and oppose the ethnic cleansing, occupation, and genocide experienced by Muslims in various parts of the world.”

In an open letter sent to the Muslim American community today, USCMO wrote:

“On behalf of the US Council of Muslim Organizations, congratulations. Congratulations for making our community’s voice heard loudly and clearly during this historic election, especially in pivotal swing states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Florida. Make no mistake: you helped make the difference in this election, mashAllah.

“We want to thank all of the American Muslim activists, leaders, and organizations, both inside and outside of USCMO, for working so hard to identify, register, and mobilize Muslim voters during this historic election.

“We give special thanks to our national USCMO organizations and their nationwide chapters and offices, including our local Councils in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Northwest Pacific States, and the hundreds of mosques and institutions affiliated with them.

“We thank our youth organizations, YM Inc, MAS, MYNA, MSA, and every young man and woman for the energy and enthusiasm they added to the participation of our community in this election cycle. We also thank the imams who played a role model by voting and urging the community to do so as well.

“USCMO is very proud of every Muslim American who exercised his and her right to vote. However, our community’s work is not done. Voting is just one part of civic engagement.

“We must now advance positing change by encouraging the incoming administration to include Muslim voices in decision making and purse just policies both here at home and around the world. USCMO looks forward to working with all of you in that pursuit, insha’Allah.”
