Senior Advisor to the President of Turkish Religious Affairs
Prof. Selim Argun is Senior Advisor to the President of Religious Affairs in Türkiye and an accomplished scholar of Islamic history and waqf institutions. He earned his Ph.D. from McGill University, where his dissertation examined the relationship between the ulama, waqf, and the Ottoman state. A graduate of the Islamic University of Madinah and the University of Johannesburg, Prof. Argun has taught Islamic history at Istanbul University and held senior positions within Türkiye’s Directorate of Religious Affairs, including Deputy President (2017–2025). Fluent in Arabic, English, and French, he is known for his scholarship on Ottoman endowments, religious diplomacy, and the institutionalization of Islamic learning. His academic and administrative work together reflect a lifelong commitment to strengthening the role of faith-based institutions in serving the public good and preserving cultural and intellectual heritage.
