Investigating International Crimes in Palestine
The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel (referred to as the “Commission”) is a UN-mandated body responsible for investigating international crimes in the region. Since October 7, 2023, the Commission has been actively engaged in probing violations of international law associated with the ongoing conflict.
Objective:
The Commission’s primary focus is to scrutinize actions committed by all parties involved in the conflict, assessing their adherence to international criminal law, humanitarian law, and human rights law.
Call for Information:
In a significant effort to gather comprehensive evidence, the Commission is reaching out to individuals who have departed Gaza since the onset of the war. These individuals may possess critical information regarding a range of violations, including but not limited to:
- Attacks on Civilians: Instances where civilians have been targeted.
- Assaults on Critical Infrastructure: Attacks on hospitals, residential buildings, schools, and religious sites.
- Exploitation of Civilians: Usage of civilians as human shields.
- Sexual and Gender-Based Violence: Incidents of violence based on sex or gender.
- Evacuation Orders: Issuance and execution of orders for evacuation.
- Resource Scarcity: Challenges related to the availability of essential resources and services like food, water, electricity, and fuel.
- Incitement and Misinformation: Cases of incitement to violence and spreading of misinformation or disinformation.
