(WASHINGTON, D.C. – 6/11/2024) – The US Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO) – the nation’s umbrella group of national, regional, and local Muslim associations – today welcomed Monday’s U.N. Security Council resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza that is long past due.
In a statement, USCMO Secretary-General Oussama Jammal said:
“We welcome the long overdue UN Security Council Vote calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. This is a moment that the American people have demanded from President Biden for months and it should have happened months ago, before the Israeli government slaughtered over 35,000 men, women, and children with U.S. financial, military, and diplomatic support.
“Now it’s time for President Biden to turn the UN Security Council resolution into reality by using American leverage to force the Israeli government to stop the genocide. Benjamin Netanyahu and his openly racist, genocidal cabinet members, who slaughtered more civilians after the UN Security Council vote yesterday, have made it clear that they have no intention of permanently stopping their war crimes and that they will continue to undermine U.S. efforts to secure a ceasefire.
“The United States, which has been the sole impediment to a UN Security Council ceasefire resolution for months, must end America’s complicity in the Israeli government’s daily massacres in Rafah and elsewhere. If the Biden administration is serious about stopping the violence, it must suspend U.S. aid to the Israeli government, as required by federal law, and demand that the Israeli government clearly and immediately stop the genocide.
“Once the violence ends, the U.S. has a moral responsibility to ensure the massive scaling up every form of humanitarian aid to 2.3 million beleaguered, battered, and starved Palestinians, ensure the return of all hostages and political prisoners, including the nearly 10,000 innocent Palestinians languishing in Israeli torture camps, support a global effort to rebuild Gaza, and demand end to the illegal blockade of Gaza, as well as the credible pursuit of a Palestinian state with freedom of mobility, unified self-governance, and unhindered control of its own land, sea, and airspace.
“This vision of a just and peaceful future must begin with an end to the genocide. The ceasefire resolution passed by the UN Security Council can only become viable if President Biden has the moral clarity and political courage to force Netanyahu to stop undermining efforts to secure peace and stop murdering innocent people. The world is watching and waiting.”
