Bridging Communities: The Twin Mosques Initiative Strengthens the American Muslim Fabric

The U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO) has launched the Twin Mosques Initiative, a transformative program designed to bridge cultural divides within the American Muslim community. At its core, the initiative aims to strengthen relationships between African American and immigrant Muslim communities by fostering unity, mutual understanding, and collaborative service.

As a diverse ummah, American Muslims face unique but interconnected challenges from systemic racism and harmful stereotypes to rising hate and cultural exclusion. Yet amid these struggles, African American Muslims have long led the way: founding mosques, advancing civil rights, and shaping the public face of Islam in the U.S. The Twin Mosques Initiative honors this legacy while addressing today’s needs, bringing communities together to listen, serve, and lead side by side. Now more than ever, we must stand as one ummah.

Structured around USCMO’s Seal of Equity Program, the initiative offers a step-by-step framework for mosques to deepen their inclusivity and impact. From the Bronze Seal, which promotes foundational cultural education, to the Platinum Seal, which represents long-term collaboration and equity-driven programming, each level empowers mosques to become stronger agents of justice.

A powerful example is the partnership between Masjid Al-Mu’minun and Roswell Community Masjid in Atlanta. Their journey began with cultural competency workshops led by the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative (MuslimARC) and grew into joint action through a “Feeding the Homeless Community Day.” These acts of unity sparked new relationships and a shared vision for change.

Through this bold initiative, USCMO is helping mosques reimagine their role not just as places of worship, but as centers of solidarity and leadership. The Twin Mosques Initiative is a call to action: to embrace our diversity, honor our shared history, and build a more united future.

This initiative is in partnership with Islamic Relief USA.
